ECA offering its full support as an active partner
in the European Week of Sport
Thursday, 20 08 2015
ECA is proud to associate itself as an official partner in the European Week of Sport. This initiative was launched with the aim of promoting sport and physical activity across Europe for all regardless of age, background or fitness level.
Recent studies show that physical activity across the EU is falling resulting in negative consequences for the health of citizens but also wider society and economy as a whole; the cost of health care rises and greater absenteeism through ill-health from the workplace is on the increase leading to a drop in productivity.
As part of the campaign, each year a week will be dedicated to activities around sports and physical activity at all levels including EU, national, regional and local level. 2015 will mark the start of this initiative during the week of the 7-13 September which coincides with ECA's General Assembly in Geneva.
Along with a number of other leading sports organisations from across Europe, ECA has agreed to offer its backing and full support. Essentially through the use of its communication platforms, ECA will highlight the European Week of Sport throughout the entire week. Likewise, ECA Member Clubs will be encouraged to spread the word to their millions of fans worldwide.
Commenting on ECA's partnership with the European Commission on the European Week of Sport, ECA Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated:
"When I heard about the EU's attempts to encourage greater physical activity among citizens I immediately agreed to offer ECA's backing. Most people, who are becoming less physically active, will usually face negative consequences for their health. As football clubs we have the chance to promote a healthy lifestyle, especially among our supporters. I would like to congratulate Commissioner Navracsics on this important initiative."
